Rock and Pop
Launching in October 2019, we designed the Contemporary Music School to cater for both established musicians studying contemporary music and complete beginners wanting to learn a rock/pop instrument. As part of this exciting new venture we are proud to partner with Rockschool and BIMM Bristol.
As part of this new programme there will be an after school programme for students to form bands and learn to write songs, whilst the ‘Let’s Rock’ courses help beginners to learn how to play a rock and pop instrument.
Contemporary Music School
The Contemporary Music School (CMS) is open to all students who have learnt a rock/pop instrument to a Rockschool (RSL) grade 1 standard. Instruments covered include guitar, bass guitar, drums, keyboard, vocals and ukulele.
The weekly after school band sessions are for more advanced players working towards further RSL exams and performances. Professional musicians will tutor pupils as a group, with pupils formed into bands according to their individual levels. Each band will receive regular advice and tuition from a rotation of tutors to cover all aspects of band performance, as well as some of the band rehearsal time being pupil led. There will also be professional ‘Bands in Residence’ running their own open rehearsals, so pupils will have an opportunity to get a real insight into what skills are required to be a professional musician.
Membership of the CMS will cost £65 per term (Autumn, Spring or Summer) and includes ten, 90 minute sessions each term. We also provide a PA system, drum kit and all other equipment required to run a band rehearsal, with a new recording studio available for bands to record the songs they learn.
‘Let’s Rock’ courses
To introduce our new ‘Let’s Rock’ holiday courses we will be piloting an intensive training course method in partnership with Rockschool. This course is only open to beginners and is aimed at pupils aged 9+. The programme is a series of holiday courses each half term/full term holiday. Students will practice between courses during term time and return for intensive lessons each holiday, until they are ready to join the weekly sessions at the Contemporary Music School as part of a band.
The cost is £129 per term – Autumn, Spring or Summer. This includes 12 hours of tuition per term, loan of an instrument, access to amps, sound equipment and RSL materials, including books, online teaching resources, backing tracks and online videos. Tutors will also be available during term time to offer advice and tips if pupils have any questions. A typical day on the course would run from 9am to 3pm, with the first course planned to take place over two days in October half term 2019.
